China’s Electric Truck Boom Is Starting to Pressure Diesel
Heavy trucks are becoming one of the clearest tests of whether battery economics can move beyond passenger cars.
Electric passenger cars proved that batteries could compete in a mass-market vehicle. Heavy trucks are a harder test. They drive longer hours, carry more weight and generate revenue only when they are moving.
That makes operating economics unusually important. According to the International Energy Agency, electric truck sales more than doubled globally in 2025 and one in four trucks sold in China was electric. The growth was overwhelmingly concentrated in China.
The reason is not simply regulation or novelty. In high-utilization fleets, fuel and maintenance savings can offset a higher purchase price much faster than they can for a lightly used passenger vehicle.
